No foreign nationals registered as voters – Police

Police investigations have established that the alleged foreign nationals in the voters register whose names were published in some sections of the media are all Zambian Nationals.

In May this year, Former Mazabuka Central UPND Member of Parliament and her Chongwe counterpart Sylvia Masebo reported at Woodlands Police station that over 500, 000 foreign nationals were in the voters register which resulted in a police investigation.

Briefing journalists in Lusaka today on the findings of the Police investigation, Inspector General of Police Kakoma Kanganja says the 207 names of purported foreigners published in the Post Newspapers have been found to be Zambian Nationals from Chief Chanje’s chiefdom in Rukuzye Ward in Chipangali Constituency.

Mr. Kanganja says to the great disappointment of the police, the details of the people published were collected from residents of the same ward by village head-woman Katamanda whose real names are Alaina Phiri after being engaged by two women who were introduced to her by headman Mbobo, whose real names are Tumeyo Phiri a UPND Chairman for Rukuzye Ward in Chipangali Constituency,

He explained that Mr. Phiri promised to pay K2, 500 to village head-woman Katamanda after the task of collecting details and a K500 down payment was made.

Mr Kanganja says the two have since been arrested and jointly charged for the offence of illegal practice relating to the election, contrary to section 87 (id) and Section 88 of the Electoral Process Act No. 35 of 2016 as read together with Section 21 (1c) of the penal code Act Chapter 87 of the Laws of Zambia.

Meanwhile, Mr. Kanganja says investigations have been launched into the story in yesterday’s edition of the Post Newspapers in which some police officers were pictured with campaign posters for UPND president Hakainde Hichilema.
