ZCSD dismayed by govt’s commitment to special education

The Zambia Council for Social Development (ZCSD) is dismayed at the level of commitment by government towards special education.

ZCSD Executive Director Lewis Mwape says people living with disability seem to receive a raw deal in terms of education delivery, despite education playing a major role in changing the lives of people and the nation at large.

Mr Mwape says his organization’s visit to Chinsali Special Education centre reveals that government needs to improve its funding to the schools hosting centres for Special Education.

He has also called upon the privileged individuals, cooperate citizens, NGOs and cooperating partners to complement government efforts in uplifting the lives of children living with disability in schools.

Mr Mwape says there is need to specifically improve on the infrastructure and other facilities that would facilitate learning and teaching for pupils living with disability.

He also notes that special education has also suffered low staffing levels, and has since appealed to education authorities to ensure that trained Special Education teachers are posted in schools with Special Education Centres and units.
