Lungu launches K1.5 billion Kafue water project

Republican President Edgar Lungu has launched the K1.5 billion Kafue Bulk Water project.

Speaking during the launch of the project in Kafue today, President Lungu disclosed that government has contributed K225 million as counterpart funding towards the project.

President Lungu says the project once completed is expected to produce 50 million liters of treated water per day which will result in increased water supply hours in Lusaka.

He says government has continued to mobilize both domestic and external resources to secure good water supply and sanitation services.

President Lungu has further reiterated government’s commitment to improving the provision of water supply and sanitation services to the general public in rural, urban and peri urban areas.

He said this in a speech read on his behalf by Finance Minister Alexander Chikwanda.

Speaking earlier, Local Government and Housing Minister Stephen Kampyongo says the launch of the Kafue bulk water supply project reflects the fruits of effective water sector reforms in line with the Vision 2030 and the revised Sixth National Development Plan.

And Lusaka water and sewerage company interim Chief Executive Officer Manuel Mutale explained that the current water demand for Lusaka stands at about 450 million liters per day against a daily production of 200 million liters.

And speaking on behalf of Chinese Ambassador to Zambia, Yang Youming, Chinese Embassy political counselor Chen Shijie notes that construction of infrastructure is of great importance in the economic and social development of a country and the improvement the people’s living standards.
