Govt forfeits trucks laden with maize

More than 20 thousand by 50 kilogram bags of maize allegedly meant for illegal export have been seized.

Taskforce against Maize Smuggling Chairperson Steady Mwale has told journalists in Lusaka that the maize seized from various parts of the country was to be illegally exported to Zimbabwe, Malawi and the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).

He says the seized maize and the truck used to transport the commodity will be forfeited to the state.

Mr Mwale who is also Lusaka province permanent secretary says the 20 trucks which were intercepted by the Zambia National Service are believed to belong to Zambians but bear foreign number plates.

Mr. Mwale has since commended the Zambia National Service for showing vigilance on maize smuggling at exit points.

And Stock Feed Import and Export Secretary Andrew Musonda has welcomed government’s initiative to come up with the Taskforce against Maize Smuggling to neighboring countries.
