An international independent auditor engaged by the Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ) to audit the voters register says there are no foreign nationals on register.

Presenting the findings of the audit during the ECZ Stakeholders meeting in Lusaka today, Team Leader Dismus Ong’ondi says there was no empirical evidence to show that indeed foreign nationals were registered as voters.

Mr. Ong’ondi says apart from the two foreign nationals who were identified and removed from the register before it was audited, no more cases have been detected.

And Mr. Ong’ondi says 2,500 voters in the register have the same NRC numbers, names and dates of birth.

He says the audit also established that while the Central Statistical Office (CSO) estimates that about 486, 000 people over the age of 18 have died from 2011 to 2015, only 62, 000 people have been removed from the register on account of being deceased.

Speaking earlier, ECZ Chairperson Justice Esau Chulu says the commission with the assistance from the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), secured the services of two independent experts to carry out an independent audit of the provisional register partly in response to concerns raised by some stakeholders as well as an electoral best practice.

And the Inspector General of Police, who was represented by Alfred Nawa the Deputy Director for Operations says police are still actively investigating reports of foreign registered voters and will soon issue a full report.
