47 deaths recorded on Heroes’ & Unity Days

Forty Seven (47) deaths were recorded during the heroes and unity holidays due to road traffic accidents compared to 29 deaths recorded during the same period last.

Police deputy spokesperson Rae Hamoonga says a total of 282 road traffic accidents were recorded during the period as compared to 285 recorded last year indicating a decrease of three road traffic accidents.

He says Copperbelt recorded the highest number of accidents with 66 road traffic accidents, followed by Lusaka with 64, while Southern and Central provinces both recorded 34 each.

Mr. Hamoonga says North Western province recorded 20 accidents, Luapula 10, Northern Nine, Muchinga Seven and Western province recorded five road traffic accidents.

He says out of the total number of accidents recorded, 38 were fatal, 29 serious injuries, 65 slight injury and 140 damage only accidents.

He has attributed the increase to human error such as over speeding and non compliance to road traffic rules and regulations by motorists and pedestrians.
