ActionAid Zambia has encouraged mining firms to invest in the development of their own power generation either using solar or thermal to support their mining activities.

ActionAid Country Director Nalucha Ziba tells QTV News that the recent pronouncement by government that mines should consider setting up their own power plant should be supported as this will scale up mining production.

Ms Ziba says this is a welcome move as the bulk of electricity goes to the mining sector and that it would be better if mines start producing their own electricity.

She notes that this move would also take away pressure from Zesco as the utility company will no longer supply power to the mines.

Ms Ziba has since encouraged mining companies to develop their own micro-grids to supplement electricity supply from the national grid.
