The Ministry of Gender is disgusted with the shameful video circulating on social media depicting a battered young woman at the hands of ‘thugs’ in full view of on lookers.
Gender Minister Professor Nkandu Luo says the filming of the video goes to show that people were not concerned about the wellbeing of the helpless woman as they could have come to her rescue or even report to the relevant authorities.
Professor Luo says what happened is un-Zambian citing that in a Christian nation culture demands that women should be treated with sacredness.
She adds that the fight against GBV may not be won if victims and members of the public are not reporting incidences of GBV to relevant authorities especially the Zambia Police Service but instead resort to posting such vices on social media.
Professor Luo has implored the Zambia Information and Communications Authority (ZICTA) and all mobile service providers to monitor circulation of such videos and Zambia Police to start following up on such cases and bring the offenders to book.
She has further urged all well meaning Zambians and stakeholders to collaborate with the Government in the fight against gender based violence and be proactive in ensuring that together they realise the Sustainable Development Goals targeted at ending the vice.
