Maintaining fuel and electricity subsidies is fair- ZCSD

Zambia Council for Social Development (ZCSD) Executive Secretary Lewis Mwape says it is only fair for government to continue subsidizing fuel and electricity.

Mr Mwape says government has the responsibility to take care of its citizens.

He says the suggestion by the World Bank that government should remove subsidies on fuel and electricity should therefore be ignored.

Mr Mwape adds that what government should do instead is to ensure it gets a fair share from the country’s mining sector so that it covers up for what is being spent on subsidizing.

He says it is unfair for foreign investors in the mining industry to continue benefiting from the country’s extractive industry at the expense of the Zambian people.

Mr. Mwape states that removing subsidies would be a burden on the poor majority Zambians.
