Visiting US Assistant Secretary of State for Africa Affairs Linda Thomas Greenfield has hailed Zambia’s commitment to peace keeping missions in Africa.

Ms. Greenfield says it is clear that the Country is now proving its leadership potential from the number of missions it has supported by sending troops to war tone areas on the continent.

Speaking this morning when she addressed a parade of the second Zambian Peacekeeping Battalion (ZAMBAT 2) to be deployed to the Central African Republic (CAR), Ms. Greenfield says the US believes strongly that Africa should be an African peacekeeping operation.

Ms. Greenfield says the US is pleased that Zambia’s defence forces are again playing an active role in the UN peacekeeping operations across Africa with CAR being the latest mission.

And speaking at the same parade, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs, Rayford Mbulu thanked the US government for the support rendered to ZAMBAT 1 mission in CAR.

Mr. Mbulu has urged the US government to further extend its support to helping Zambia establish a permanent peacekeeping training center.

He says once this center is established, the Zambian government is certain that it will greatly help expand the country’s capacities in peacekeeping operations on the African continent.
