Kafue Steel Plant Technical Director Dr. Julius Kaoma says steel industry is the backbone of economic development in any country across the world.

Dr. Kaoma said this today when President Edgar Lungu visited the Kafue Steel Plant.

Dr. Kaoma says the company which is fully owned by Zambians has the capacity to produce world class metal and steel product.

He says the steel plant is currently operating at 120, 000 tonnes capacity annually.

He has told President Lungu that the Kafue Steel produced in Zambia had been used in the construction industries in South Africa and other countries in the region.

He mentions the Oliver Tambo International Airport in South Africa as a beneficiary of the Kafue Steel during the construction.

Dr. Kaoma also said that engineers working on the famous Mongu Kalabo Bridge used the Kafue Steel.

He has since appealed to President Lungu to look at how best government can come up with a deliberate policy in marketing the local product locally.

Dr. Kaoma says if the company can be fully operational it would create over 4000 permanent Jobs and contribute heavily to the country’s GDP.

Currently the steel company has a total of 1, 000 workers.

Later President Lungu had a successful rally in Kafue.
