FODEP hails ECZ’s boldness

The Foundation for Democratic Process (FODEP) has hailed the boldness of the Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ) to condemn acts of political violence in the Country.

FODEP finds it gratifying and encouraging for the ECZ to come out in the open in condemning the vice especially that the commission has a major role to play in stopping acts of political violence.

Acting Executive Director Chimfwembe Mweenge says his organization is however urging the ECZ to be assertive and exercise its powers without fear or favor when it comes to political violence.

Mr. Mweenge has told Qfm News in a statement that the Electoral Code of Conduct has vested adequate powers and actions that the ECZ can mete out on perpetrators of political violence.

He states that FODEP is calling upon the ECZ to exercise its powers as enshrined in part 2 (17) of the Electoral Code of Conduct.

Mr. Mweenge notes  that under this provision the Commissions has a wide range of powers including summoning perpetrators of violence to reprimand them and to disqualify candidates.

He says his organization is therefore calling upon the ECZ to reprimand all political parties and candidates who are involved in acts that are in violation of the Electoral Code of Conduct.
