Traditional leaders in Muchinga Province have commended President Edgar Lungu for increasing maize floor price from K75 to K85 per 50 kg bag for the 2016 crop marketing season.

Traditional leaders in Muchinga have told ZANIS in Chinsali in separate telephone interviews from their palaces that they are happy with the move by President Lungu to increase the maize floor price for the 2016 crop marketing season.

The traditional leaders are Chieftainess Waitwika of the Namwanga people of Nakonde, Chief Katyetye of the Tambo people of Isoka, Chief Mwenichifungwe of the Fungwe people of Mafinga, Chief Mulilo of the Senga people of Chama and Chief Lundu of the Senga people of Chama district.

The traditional leaders have said the increase will greatly benefit the small scale farmers and boost the agricultural sector.

They have said that the Patriotic Front government has performed well in the agricultural sector, adding that the increase in the maize floor price confirms the seriousness that President Lungu and his government attaches to the development of the agricultural sector.

And Nakonde District Cooperative Union (NDCU) chairperson, George Silwenga, has said co-operators in the border town are happy with the increase of the maize floor price from K75 to K85 per 50 kg bag.

Mr. Silwenga has described the move by President Lungu to increase the maize floor price as simply excellent, adding that it has been done in good faith.

The crop marketing season to be conducted by the Food Reserve Agency (FRA) will commence immediately after the moisture content has gone down to below 12 per cent.
