Govt makes progress in implementing Child rights policies

Government says it has made steady progress in formulating and implementing Child Rights policies.

Tourism and Arts Deputy Minister Patrick Ngoma says government has enacted a number of legislation aimed at promoting the welfare of children in the country.

Speaking during the commemoration of the Day of African Child in Luangwa district today, Mr Ngoma says the PF government remains resolute to addressing the challenges affecting young people in the country.

He points out that the approval of the national child policy of 2015, amendment of the Marriage Act, successful implementation of the school re-entry policy are some of the key legislation helping in promoting the children’s rights in Zambia.

Speaking at the same commemoration, Save the Children Advocacy and Communications Director Caroline Nenguke says the recently revised National Child Policy and the accompanying plan of action as well as the child code bill currently under development give the nation an opportunity to have guiding documents and laws that help in protecting the rights of children in the country.

And Child Fund Zambia Programs Director Doras Chirwa says for children’s rights to be fully recognized, there is need to make all child related abuse of rights non-bailable offenses.

This year’s Day of the African Child was commemorated at Kapoche Primary School in Luangwa under the theme ‘Protecting Children’s Rights: it is our collective responsibility’.
