Dr. Mphande, who is a University of Zambia Lecturer in the school of mining, tells QTV News in an interview that the call by government encouraging mining firms to establish their own power plants is long overdue.

He says mines world over, have gone the route of setting up their own power plants so that their operations are not interrupted as a result of power deficits.

Dr Mphanda disclosed that Konkola Copper Mines (KCM) management recently visited the UNZA School of Mining and revealed plans to establish their own power plant that will be producing about 500 Mega Watts of power.

Dr. Mphande has since encouraged government to come up with a policy that will see to it that mining firms have their own power plants so that their production is not in any way affected by power deficits.
