ZED urges legislation for public institutions

The opposition Zambians for Empowerment and Democracy (ZED) has called on the next government to introduce legislation that will make public institutions autonomous by making sure that all portfolios are applied for and taken up by people who are qualified.

The opposition political party says this is because the amended constitution falls short of tackling the most critical issues such as excessive Presidential powers and appointing of Ministers from outside Parliament.

ZED Spokesperson Wesley Miyanda says the constitution gives too many powers to the Executive which does not only cripple the flourishing of Zambia’s democracy but also undermine good governance.

Mr. Miyanda says the president is mandated to control the running of all public institutions such as Electoral Commission of Zambia, ZESCO, Zambia National Broadcasting Corporation to mention but a few by appointing the top most officers.

He says this trend ends up fuelling patronage, corruption tribalism, nepotism and above all incompetence because it is not true that all those appointed are fully qualified for these jobs.
