The Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ) says it is taking the media reports which broke during the inspection period alleging that the 2016 Provisional Register of Voters contained entries of foreigners.

And the commission has disclosed that some districts reported missing voters from the 2016 Provisional Register of Voters and that an estimated 5, 600 new registration were affected in the 13 districts.

ECZ Public Relations Manager Crispin Akufuna tells QFM News in a statement that these districts include Kapiri Mposhi, Itezhi – Tezhi, Lufwanyama, Chingola, Sinda, Nchelenge, Lusaka, Kaputa, Kabompo, Kasempa, Manyinga and Kalomo.

Mr. Akufuna says this represents about 0.3% of the 1.69 million new registrations recorded during the 2015/2016 voter registration exercise.

Giving an update of the voter verification exercise, Mr. Akufuna says preliminary reports from the districts indicate an average turnout of 30 percent of voters for the inspection exercise at the various verification/polling stations.

He says the short code *214# recorded over 453, 000 verifications while the website recorded over 23, 800 searches.

And Mr. Akufuna says the commission is looking into reports of alleged registration of foreign nationals.

He says the matter was reported to Woodlands Police Station and that the police have since instituted investigations.
