Draft correctional service Bill formalized

ZCS Commissioner General Percy Chato says the draft bill has since been submitted to the Ministry of Home Affairs for approval.

Speaking during a media briefing in Lusaka today, Mr. Chato is hopeful that the draft bill would be passed in the next sitting of parliament.

He states that the current Prison Act is archaic to respond to the modern happenings.

And Mr. Chato says overcrowding is still a major challenge in prisons with facilities currently holding an estimated 19, 273 inmates.

Speaking earlier, Commissioner Corrections and Extension Services, Tobias Mwanza urged Zambians to embrace ex-prisoners and offer them jobs.

He says most of the ex-prisoners have acquired skills in various fields and only need support such capital to start businesses.
