The Freedom Fighters Association has appealed to political leaders to safeguard the peace and unity they fought for 52 years ago.

Association President Sikota Wina has told a media briefing in Lusaka that freedom fighters are concerned with some emerging negative vices such as political violence, ritual killings, and hate speech among other things.

Mr. Wina says this year’s elections should not be about the struggle for power, but for the promotion of peace and unity in the country.

He says leaders should emulate first Republican President Dr. Kenneth Kaunda who surrendered power to late President Fredrick Chiluba freely because he understood the will of the people and the need to safeguard peace and unity.

Mr. Wina states that leaders are there to serve the people and not to serve their interests, thus the need to respect the will and wishes of the people.

Speaking at the same event, Association Member Chapa Chikamba emphasized the need for Zambians to remain united before, during and after the elections.
