The Road Transport and Safety Agency (RTSA) and the Zambia Police Service have launched the Safe Corridor on the T2 road between Chilanga and Kabwe.

RTSA has also donated assorted equipment to the Zambia Police to help with the enforcement of the road traffic rules on the Safe Corridor.

Speaking during the handover ceremony held at the Zambia Police headquarters, RTSA Director and Chief Executive Officer Zindaba Soko says government is committed to reduce road traffic fatalities by 50 per cent by the year 2020.

Mr. Soko adds that to achieve this feature there is need for road safety interventions on accidents prone roads such as the T2 road between Chilanga and Kabwe.

He says the safe corridor interventions will be replicated to other corridors with a poor road safety record.

Mr Soko also revealed that the RTSA will in the next few months launch the Accident Information System (AIS) as a pilot project in Lusaka.

The system is aimed at having a computerized accident data system which will help in the analysis of the road traffic crashes and develop response strategies that will lead to the prevention of the road traffic crashes and improve Zambia’s road safety profile.

And speaking at the same function, Zambia Police Service Deputy Inspector General Malcolm Mulenga says the police service will ensure that the equipment is used accordingly and for the intended purpose to ensure that lives are protected by avoiding fatal crashes.

Among the equipment that were donated during the launch of the Safe Corridor on T2 road, are two saloon enforcement motor vehicles, four breathalyzers, four thermal printers, one hand held speed camera, four mobile phones, 20 reflective traffic cones, 20 reflective rain coats, 20 reflective winter jackets and 20 reflective bibs.
