Parliament urged not to abrogate constitution

PARLEYThe Young African Leaders Initiative (YALI) says Parliament should not abrogate the republican Constitution by sitting beyond the stipulated date of 11th MAY,2016.

YALI governance advisor Isaac Mwanza says his organization is worried that Parliament might go against Article 81 (3) of the republican constitution which states that Parliament shall stand dissolved 90 days before the holding of the next general election.

Mr. Mwanza says as far YALI is concerned, Parliament must stand dissolved on 11th May,2016, by operation of the law.

He notes that given the number of bills government has submitted for consideration at the last minute, the question that should arise is whether the proceedings of Parliament will go beyond midnight on Wednesday.

Mr. Mwanza has since urged the Law Association of Zambia (LAZ) to guide the nation whether it will be legal for Parliament to hold proceedings beyond midnight on Wednesday 11th May,2016.
