Zambia coach George Lwandamina has backed Kennedy Mweene to continue as Chipolopolo first-choice despite getting very little game time at Mamelodi Sundowns this season.

Mweene has played just four league games and another two in cup competition for the 2015/2016 champions this term.

Uganda Cranes goalkeeper Dennis Onyango is now Sundowns preferred number one.

“He is still a member of the senior national team. I know a decision will be made at an appropriate time but as it stands now, he is still an active member of the team,” Lwandamina said.

“I know it is not good to continue with no game time but I am sure that he has the experience which can help the team.”

Lwandamina added that it was not his job to tell Mweene to move on to another club in order for him to find game time.

“I can’t do that, he has to make his own decisions, he has been making his own decisions up to now and I have to respect that,” Lwandamina said.

Mweene, who joined Sundowns two seasons ago from Free State Stars, is expected to be Zambia’s number one for next month’s penultimate 2017 Africa Cup Group E qualifier away to Guinea Bissau.
