Human Error Major Cause of Accidents- Simbao

SimbaoTransport and communications Minister Kapembwa Simbao says the main cause of road accidents in Zambia is human error accounting for 87.3 percent.

 

Mr Simbao has told parliament in a ministerial statement that other causes include vehicle condition at 1.5%,animal conflict at 1.1%,road conditions 0.4% while bad weather conditions account for 0.1% with other causes accounting for 9.6%.
He says some instances of human error include excessive speed, drinking and driving, fatigue and wrong overtaking among others.
Mr. Simbao says in order to reverse the upward trend in road accidents and thus address the resulting fatalities; government will focus on addressing human behavior by strengthening traffic regulations and enforcement.
He adds that government will also conduct road safety campaigns and actively improve road safety re engineering at blacks spots.

And Mr. Simbao says government will also fit all public service vehicles with global positioning tracking systems (GPS) to monitor driver behavior including over speeding on all routes countrywide.
He says government in consultation with the road transport operators has agreed on a number of measures to undertake in the immediate future to curb accidents.
