Government has hailed the work US Peace Corps undertake in the country to improve the lives of Zambians.

Speaking when he officiated at the swearing-in ceremony of 69 new volunteers in Lusaka today, Lands, Natural Resources and Environmental Protection Minister, Davies Mwango  has challenged the volunteers to strive to help change the country.

Mr. Mwango says government wants to ensure that fisheries industry takes the leading role in improving the economy.

He says the fisheries industry has a critical role to play in meeting one of the greatest challenges confronting the world which is food security.

And U.S. Ambassador to Zambia Erick Shultz has congratulated the volunteers on the successful completion of their three-month training and urged them to continue to learn and integrate into their new Zambian communities.

He also reminded them that their service will directly contribute to the Zambia’s economic sustainability and future progress.

And speaking at the same function, Chief Chamuka of Chisamba in Central Province has expressed gratitude to Chieftainess Nkomeshya Mukamabo the second and his chiefdom for their work in training the new volunteers in the local languages and culture to help them become effective agents of change.

And Peace Corps Country Director Leon Kayego says the newly sworn-in volunteers will help implement agribusiness programs in local communities.

He says the Volunteers will also teach community members how to protect and conserve the environment and adapt to climate change.
