Solwezi Social Welfare officer jailed for corruption

CourtThe Solwezi Magistrate’s Court has sentenced a Social Welfare Officer at the Ministry of Community Development and Social Welfare to 12 months Imprisonment with Hard labour for corrupt practices involving K 2, 000.

Magistrate John Harrison Mbuzi of Kabwe Magistrate’s Court who was presiding over the matter, yesterday, found Clifford Hamilandu, 37, guilty of One (1) Count of Corrupt Practices by Public Officer Contrary to Section 19(1) as Read with Section 40 of the Anti-Corruption Act No. 38 of 2010.

Particulars of the offence were that on a date unknown but between 1st April 2011 and 30th April 2011, in Solwezi, being a public officer namely Social Welfare Officer, jointly and whilst acting together with others unknown, corruptly received K2, 000 cash gratification from Joyce Nshindo as an inducement or reward for themselves to pervert the course of justice in a criminal case concerning Justine Kaseya Lukanga, the said Joyce Nyondo’s son, a matter or transaction concerning the Judiciary,  a Public Body.

In the same matter the court acquitted Henry Aongola, a Magistrate at Solwezi Subordinate Court on a Charge of Corrupt Practices by Public Officer Contrary to Section 19(1) of the Anti-Corruption Act No 38 of 2010.

Meanwhile, The Anti-Corruption Commission in Mansa has arrested a local Businessman for Corrupt practices with a Public Officer.

John Kalyongo Mwaba 43, of Chitamba area in Mansa who is a trader at UB Market was arrested today 27th April ,2016 and charged with one count of Corrupt Practices with Public Officer Contrary to Section 19 (2) of the Anti-Corruption Act No. 3 of 2012.

Particulars of the offence are that Mwaba on unknown dates but between 1st April 2016 and 30th April 2016 in Mansa corruptly gave a K 150. 00 bribe to Joyce Kunda Witika, a Public Officer in the Judiciary working as a Local Court Magistrate at Chimese Local Court in Mansa District, as an Inducement in order for her to pass a favourable Judgement in a matter where Mwaba was seeking the Courts intervention to recover K10, 000.00 from a debtor, a matter or transaction involving Chimese Local Court.

Mwaba denied the charge and has been released on bond and will appear in Court soon.
