President Lungu opens Mongu-Kalabo road

President Edgar Lungu says the over $287 million Mongu-Kalabo road project fulfills the regional aspiration to promote intra-regional trade and open markets for free movement of people, goods and services.

In a facebook posting ahead of the official opening of the Mongu-Kalabo Road and the Sioma Bridge, President Lungu says the road will also open up tourism potential to the Liuwa National Park that has significant wild, flora and fauna.

President Lungu has described the road built on 26 bridges across the Zambezi Plains that include a 1.2 KM stretch as an engineering marvel.

And President Lungu says the opening of the Sioma Bridge will also help exploit the country’s tourism potential as the area has the Sioma Falls and the Sioma-Ngwezi National Park which has one the largest population of Elephants.

He says there is therefore need to intensify activities and resources to curb recent poaching of the elephants for their ivory in this area.

President Lungu notes that the Sioma Bridge relives ancient short routes that were used from North Western Province right to Livingstone which can now be used for trade and quick movements of goods and services.
