Govt advised against introducing price controls

Government has been advised against introducing price controls on certain commodities, but allow the market to regulate prices.

Civil Society for Poverty Reduction (CSPR) Executive Director Patrick Nshindano says Zambia’s economy is liberalized, and therefore such measures should not be encouraged in a growing economy.

Mr. Nshindano states that the Statutory Instrument on price controls for mealie meal government intends to introduce is not healthy for the country’s economy.

He says in as much as he understands where the nation is coming from with regards mealie meal smuggling, the shortage of mealie meal and the high prices of the commodity, price controls will not help in anyway.
