Zesco United reach group stage

Zesco United League win

ZESCO United Football Club has booked a place in the lucrative group stage of the 2016 CAF Champions league.

The Ndola based outfit beat Stade Malien of Mali 2-1 at Levy Mwanawasa stadium this afternoon to qualify to the group stage 5-2 on aggregate.

Goals from ZESCO’s Kenyan import Jesse Were and Maybin Mwaba ensured ZESCO confirmed their qualification to the group stage after winning 3-1 away in Bamako a fortnight ago.

This is the second time the ZESCO Limited sponsored side is qualifying to the lucrative group stage having first reached the same stage in 2009 when they again beat a Malian side AC Djoliba to become the only Zambian team to have so far achieved that first.

The George Lwandamina tutored side will now wait for the draws for the group stage to be conducted in May in readiness for the kickoff of the group stage matches in June.

Meanwhile ZANACO football club has been kicked out of the CAF Confederation cup after losing away in Tunisia to Stade Gabesien 3 nil for the Tunisian side to progress to the next stage 4-1 on aggregate.
