The Zambia Union of Financial Institutions and Allied Workers (ZUFIAW) says the kwacha’s recent appreciation should translate into improved living conditions and a thriving economic environment in the country.

ZUFIAW General Secretary Chingati Msiska says there is need to take deliberate efforts that will translate into improved living conditions for the citizenry.

Mr. Msiska says there is need to rise above the political divide and work together with government to ensure that the recent appreciation of the kwacha yields direct benefits for the Zambian people.

He says Zambians have been through a very difficult year and are looking for some relief, hence the need to ensure that their cost of living is reduced, their cost of doing business reduced and other tangible benefits which may accrue to them.

Mr Msiska says ZUFIAW commends government, through the central bank for the austerity measures put in place to stabilize the local currency.

He adds that the only way to ensure that the gains the kwacha has made are not temporal is to strengthen the exchange rate through reduced inflation, increased productivity and deliberate diversification into high-value commodity manufacturing.
