High prices of commodities worry CCPC

The Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (CCPC) has expressed concern that prices of basic commodities have remained high despite the recent gains the kwacha has made against the US dollar.

CCPC public relations officer, Hanford Chaaba says business houses should acknowledge the Kwacha’s appreciation by reciprocating through price reductions.

Mr. Chaaba says the CCP is therefore hoping that business houses will reduce commodity prices once the old stock has run out.

The Kwacha has made significant gains in recent weeks against the US dollar backed by a rally on emerging markets and the higher price of copper.

The local current opened the day yesterday up 1.14 percent at K9.50.00 against the US dollar.
