Zambia has 600,433 metric tonnes of maize

The country has a total of 600, 433 metric tonnes of maize stocks to last up to August this year, according to a verification conducted by the Inter-Agency Teams constituted by government in all provinces.

And Government says it will only allow the export of maize and maize products after meeting domestic demand and if there is a surplus.

Speaking during a media briefing in Lusaka today, Ministry of Agriculture Permanent Secretary Julius Shawa says  of the total maize stocks, the Food Reserve Agency (FRA) is holding 452, 084 metric tonnes of maize as at 12th April, 2016.

Dr. Shawa says the private sector stocks stand at 148, 350 metric tonnes of maize most of which is in Lusaka, Central and Eastern Provinces.

He adds that government is coming up with a Statutory Instrument that will spell out measures on how management of maize grain and its products will be conducted.

Dr Shawa has since commends the FRA for the proper management of the national maize stocks.
