Higher Education Minister Michael Kaingu has announced the reopening of the two public universities which were closed in February following students’ unrest.

Dr. Kaingu has told Parliament in a ministerial statement that the Copperbelt University will reopen on 17th April, 2016, while the University of Zambia will reopen on 24th April, 2016.

He says this is after managements at the two institutions met most of the conditions he gave for reopening of the universities.

Dr. Kaingu however, says students facing disciplinary charges will not be allowed to report pending the conclusion of the disciplinary process.

He says 14 students at the Copperbelt University and 9 at the University of Zambia are facing disciplinary action.

Dr. Kaingu has disclosed that at UNZA only 9 students have been subjected to the disciplinary process while at CBU there are 14.

And Dr. Kaingu says President Edgar Lungu prevailed over him to reverse the decision to abolish the students’ meal allowances.
