Govt blamed for Saturday’s traffic accident

The Zambia Road Safety Trust has blamed government for Saturday’s road traffic accident in which 25 people were reported to have lost their lives.

Chairperson Daniel Mwamba says his Trust believes that Saturday’s accident was preventable and avoidable had it not been for negligence on the part of government.

In a statement Mr. Mwamba notes that given that the cause of the accident is said to have been over-speeding it points to the fact that the Statutory Instrument (SI) that compels all public service passenger vehicles to install speed limiters is not being enforced.

Mr. Mwamba states that if this SI was in enforcement yesterday’s accident and many others that have happened before involving public service passenger vehicles would not have occurred.

He says this therefore means that the families of the people that died in Saturday’s accident must put the blame on government for lack of action on its part to enforce the law.

Mr. Mwamba has since asked government to come out openly in admitting the blame and fully compensate each family affected by the said accident as well as others of similar accidents.

He says government should go further and fully investigate what lead to Saturday’s accident.
