Civil Society for Poverty Reduction (CSPR) says there is need for government to come up with long term measures that will help ensure the country has sufficient stocks of maize year in year out.

CSPR Executive Director Patrick Nshindano says much as the suspension of maize export might have the impact intended, it still remains a short term measure.

Mr. Nshindano says the country should realize that it has a huge market potential in the region which it needs to take advantage of and harness.

He says in order to take advantage of the market potential, the country needs to promote export led production.

Mr. Nshindano states that the country can use the existing Farmer Input Support Programme and reform it in a way that it is tailored to diversify production.

He states that in a liberalized economy, preventing farmers from exporting would be killing them.
