Lake Kariba water level still low – Govt

Government has disclosed that the water level in Lake Kariba is still low to adequately generate power.

Ministry of Energy and Water Development, Director of Energy, Oscar Kalumiana has told a panel discussion on the Power Sector organized by the US Embassy in Lusaka that the water level in the lake now stands at 19 percent.

Mr. Kalumiana says this is compared to the same period last year when the water levels stood at around 48 percent.Kariba Dam

He says this is the more reason government is calling for cost reflective tariffs so that the private sector can invest in the energy sector to help deal the power deficit and enable all Zambians to have access to electricity by 2030.

Speaking at the same forum, US Ambassador to Zambia Eric Schultz says Zambia has the potential to export power.

Mr. Schultz has since encouraged government to embrace the private sector in dealing with the challenge of the power deficit which he says is affecting many sectors.

And Swedish Ambassador to Zambia Henrik Cederin says the Swedish Government is proud to partner with the Zambian government in investing in the energy sector not only in hydro power generation, but also other sources of energy.
