The Centre for Trade Policy and Development (CTPD) says there is need for the country to address factors contributing to the increase in illicit trade if it is to be curbed.

CTPD Executive Director Isabel Mukelabai has observed an increase in illicit trade not only in maize, but other products such as tobacco.

Ms. Mukelabai says some of the factors contributing to the increase in the smuggling of maize include better prices at which traders are able to sell their maize in neighboring countries.

She states that this therefore calls for the need for the country to look at its pricing mechanism.

Ms. Mukelabai adds that there is also need to avoid distortions on the domestic market which are causing challenges around the price disparity.

She further states that most cross boarders traders also avoid paying certain taxes at the border by resorting to illegal trade.
