Over 1.2 million males circumcised

Over 1.2 million males have been circumcised since the introduction of the Voluntary Medical Male Circumcision (VMMC) campaign in 2007.

Speaking during the Launch of Voluntary Medical Male Circumcision (VMMC) campaign in Lusaka today, Health Deputy Minister Dr. Chitalu Chilufya says Zambia has set itself a target to circumcise 80% of HIV-negative uncircumcised men which will prevent approximately 340,000 new HIV infections.

Dr. Chilufya says the 80% target is achievable with concerted effort, community and individual participation.

He adds that achieving this target and thereby contributing to the achievement of zero HIV infections would change the landscape of the country in all spheres.

Dr. Chilufya states that if the country is to effectively reduce the incidence of HIV,there is need for everyone to actively contribute to ensuring that Zambia achieves universal coverage of male circumcision.

Speaking earlier, Lusaka Provincial Medical Officer, Dr. Kennedy Malama says Zambia still has a high HIV/AIDS prevalence though the rate had in recent times significantly dropped.

He says campaigns such as the Voluntary Medical Male Circumcision will help reduce the incidence further.

Dr. Malama says there is need for concerted efforts in employing comprehensive strategies to encourage circumcision.
