Winston Kalengo rescued a point as he scored a 72nd minute equaliser to cancel out Jordan Massengo’s 47th minute opener for Congo and Zambia to share the spoils in a Group E 2017 Africa Cup of Nations qualification match at the New Kintele Stadium on Sunday.

This was the second 1 -1 draw between the two sides in four days after they recorded a similar result in the reverse fixture played in Ndola on Wednesday. Kalengo and Massengo were also the scorers in that match.

The draw means that Guinea Bissau who defeated Kenya 1 – 0 in Nairobi now lead the group with 7 points while Congo have dropped into second position with 6 points on goal diffrence from Zambia. Kenya in fourth have a single point.

Zambia national football team coach George Lwandamina said the result was good because it meant that his objective of qualifying the team to the final tournament was still intact.

“We are still being driven by our objective to qualify. We still have two games to play and the beauty of it is that we still have to play Guinea Bissau who now lead the group and we also have to play against Kenya. Am sure we shall be able to collect maximum points from those two matches and finish top of the group,” Lwandamina said.

Zambia will travel to Guinea Bissau during the weekend of 3rd to 5th June before hosting Kenya in the final group match in early September.

The group winner will join hosts Gabon, 12 other winners and two best overall runners-up for the final tournament which will be hosted by Gabon.
