Say no to violence – Mongu Mayor

Mongu Mayor Bright Tombi has called on the youth in Western Province to declare war against political violence and safeguard the peace Zambia has enjoyed since independence.

Speaking during the District Meeting for Political Parties organized by the Young African Leaders Initiative (YALI) in Mongu, Mr. Tombi says no political party has monopoly over violence and it’s important that political leaders become civil with each other in the run up to the August 11th general elections.

He has described the rate at which political violence has been on the increase as sickening to the country.

He says recruiting youth to balance up agents for Political violence won’t win any party an election.

Mr. Tombi has called on leaders from political parties to preach national unity and coexistence rather than incite youth to violence against each other.

And speaking at the same function, YALI President Andrew Ntewewe has bemoaned the fact that political parties are now recruiting youth to balance the force of violence when they should have been recruiting the youth to persuade voters to vote for their parties.

Mr. Ntewewe has called on leaders President Lungu, Hakainde Hichilema and other leaders to unconditionally meet and resolve the issue of violence but at the same time ensure Parliament quickly passes the law to criminalize political violence with a 10 – year jail sentence.

The District meeting is funded by the British Government the Electoral Institute for Sustainable Development and attended by youth leaders from the United Party for National Development, Patriotic Front, Democratic Front, Alliance for Democracy and Development among other parties in Western Province.
