Kampyongo directs reinforcement of Planning Act

Local Government and Housing Minister Steven Kampyongo has directed local authorities to ensure that they reinforce the Planning Act to promote orderly development of structures in unsettlement areas.

Mr. Kampyongo says government is in the process of reviewing the National Housing Policy of 1996 so that it is in tender with current trends of urban development.

Mr. Kampyongo has told Parliament that his ministry has developed the slam upgrading strategy which will guide councils to upgrade existing settlement with provision of basic infrastructure services.

He says currently his ministry is in the process of implementing the pilot project of upgrading some wards in Kanyama with basic services such as solid waste management system, water services, sanitation, access roads, street light and drainages among others.

Mr. Kampyongo says in order to address the challenges of unplanned settlements in Zambia; government has successfully enacted the Urban and Regional Planning Act No 3 of 2015, which allows planning authorities to legalize existing unplanned settlements.
