Forty one cases of Cholera recorded in Lusaka

The Ministry of Health has recorded 41 cholera cases in Kayama compound since the first case was reported on 4th February 2016.

Ministry of Health Acting Spokesperson Dr. Tasila Pitters has disclosed the development to QFM News in a statement that only one death of an 18 months old female child has been recorded so far.

Dr. Pitters says the cumulative number of suspected cases recorded so far is 41, confirmed  lab positive cases 18, Public premises inspected 152, Schools inspected 52 while water  samples collected 97.

She adds that Effective Information, Education and Communication materials distributed are 2, 192 while bottles of chlorine distributed are amounting to 15, 518 and Households  Health Education communicated stands at 128, 966.

Dr. Pitters says according to the research conducted by the Ministry, It has been discovered that the main sources of cholera is from contaminated water.

She adds that a survey was conducted in the affected area to determine the number of people who consumed water from different water sources for the last 5 days.

Dr. Pitters furthermore states that the Ministry of Health has set up active surveillance in place with contact tracing along with Health Education messages which have also been put up in catchment area.
