The Zambia Police Service last year recorded a total number of 18, 088 cases of Gender Based Violence against the 15,153 cases recorded in 2014.

Police Spokesperson Charity Munganga Chanda says this represents 16.2% increase in the number of gender based violence cases reported throughout the country in 2015 compared to 2014.

Ms Chanda says topping the list of cases reported were 6, 205 Assault Occasioning Actual Bodily Harm, 2,759 defilement, 1, 569 neglecting to provide and 1, 378 failing to provide cases.

Ms Chanda says other commonly reported gender based violence cases included Rape, Assault on a child, Indecent assault, Murder, Incest, Sexual Harassment, Child desertion and Unlawful wounding.

She says out of the defilement cases reported, Lusaka recorded the highest with 1, 586, Eastern had 247, Copperbelt 194 while the lowest was Luapula with 29 cases.

She tells QTV News in a statement that the increase in the number of cases reported is attributed to the numerous sensitization campaigns being conducted by the Zambia Police in collaboration with stakeholders.

The Police Spokesperson says information on the introduction of the Gender Based Violence Mobile Fast Track Court has also been incorporated in the sensitization campaigns done by the service in order to encourage victims to report the cases to the police.
