Government has been challenged to give a clear position over the exportation of maize to neighboring Zimbabwe following an affirmation by Zimbabwe President Robert Mugabe that the nation will import more maize from Zambia.

UPND Chairman for Rural Reconstruction and Development Moono Mapani has told QFM News in an interview that government’s silence over this issue shows that they will indeed go ahead to export more maize to Zimbabwe even when the country is likely to import maize from Brazil.

Mr. Moono has cautioned government to be careful on how they handle this issue before starving the people to death.

Mr. Mapani says it does not make sense for the government to export maize which they will later import saying this is lack of seriousness.

Meanwhile, Mr. Mapani has observed that if the country will go into campaigns ahead of August 11th general elections with the current Public Order Act, there will be violation of human rights.

He says it is for this reason that the stakeholders have been calling for the abolishment of the act as it injures and deprives the people their civil and political rights.
