The Miners PF Support Group (MPSG) says has observed the need to educate miners on the performance of copper prices at London Metal Exports (LME) for them to fully understand the source of the challenges in the mining sector.

Speaking during the official launch of the group in Mufulira today, MPSG Chairman Peter Sakala says it is not fair for some stakeholders to blame the government over the low copper prices on the international market.

Mr. Sakala says the world copper prices have in the recent past fallen to very unhealthy low levels and this has affected not only Zambia, but many other countries dealing in various commodities.

He says for the case of Zambia, which depends almost entirely on copper exports, the drop in the price of copper at LME spelt disaster for the economy.

Mr. Sakala the challenges are coupled with the energy deficit which has made things even worse for a country that already was hit by the drop in copper prices.

He says it is for this reason he feels that there is an urgent need to educate miners the reasons why there are so many challenges in the mining sector now.
