The Center for Trade, Policy and Development (CTPD) has advised government to allow the private sector export maize to neighboring Zimbabwe as opposed to a government to government deal.

CTPD Executive Director Isabel Mukelabai says exporting maize stocks stored by the Food Reserve Agency (FRA) is endangering the food security of the country.

Ms Mukelabai says it is for this reason that her organization is convinced that government should investigate and find out how much maize stocks are kept by the private sector and ascertain if they have the capacity to export maize to neighboring Zimbabwe.

She says from the data given by government indicating that the nation has a total of 930,000 metric tonnes of maize stocks, government should now start focusing on what will happen when these stocks are depleted.

Ms Mukelabai says if government does not handle well the issue of maize exports, the country risks facing hunger.
