Lack of funds derails mobile voter registration

Vice President Inonge Wina says the Electoral Commission of Zambia will not be able to conduct the planned 14 days mobile voter registration exercise which was supposed to run from 16th to 29th February,2016.

Ms. Wina has told Parliament in a Ministerial statement this morning that this is due to lack of resources and tInonge-Wina-Veephe time constraint.

She says continuing with voter registration beyond 29th February would adversely affect the 2016 elections timetable and the ECZ would not be able to certify the final register of voters by 31st July, 2016.

She adds that while the mobile voter registration was budgeted for, government did not anticipate what would come a year later.

The Vice President disclosed that revenue collection has been low and that certain projects cannot continue due to circumstances beyond the treasury.

Ms Wina however, states that the registration of voters in the district centres will continue until 29th February.

And asked by Monze Central Member of Parliament Jack Mwiimbu whether the failure to fund the ECZ to conduct the mobile voter registration exercise is an indication that government is broke, Ms. Wina dismissed the assertion.
