Cosmo petitions ECZ over hiked nomination fees

The National Revolution Party (NRP) has petitioned the Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ) to immediately convene a stakeholders meeting to discuss the hike in nomination fees.

Speaking when he presented a petition to ECZ Spokesperson, Cris Akufuna, NRP President Cosmo Mumba says his party is dismayed with the high nomination fees the Commission has set.

Dr. Mumba says the hiked fees are not only deliberately prohibitive to most political parties, but are also a democratic
breach on an individual’s political rights to contest an election without oppressive measures.

He wonders what economic turmoil the commission is facing to embark on what he has termed as a merciless fundraising venture.

Dr. Mumba has since called on the ECZ to revert back to old
nomination fees or risk being dragged to court for breach of political rights.
