Veteran Politician Vernon Mwaanga has called on government to adopt the recommendations of the Electoral Reforms Technical Committee (ERTC) which was appointed under the chairmanship of Lusaka Lawyer Mwangala Zaloumis in order to improve the electoral system in Zambia.

Dr. Mwaanga says the committee came up with many useful and progressive recommendations on how to improve the country’s electoral system and avoid electoral disputes.

He has lamented that such a progressive report has continued to gather dust.

Dr. Mwaanga points out that the misapplication of the Public Order Act, as amended in 1996, particularly during elections is also covered in this ERTC report.

He states that as long as the Public Order Act is now amended to create a leveled political playing field, it will be virtually impossible for Zambia to hold elections which meet the international standards of being free, fair and credible.

Dr. Mwaanga has maintained that the amended constitution still has serious flaws, which are capable of threatening and undermining the democratic system of governance.
