Governance and Elections Activist Stanley Mhango says the revised nomination fees the Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ) has come up with are an assault on democracy and good governance.

Mr. Mhango has charged that the fees if left unchecked will allow the rich and multinational companies to own and control political parties thereby holding governments and politicians to ransom.

He says in as much as it is expensive to run elections, the nomination fees should not be an impediment to people’s participation in the governance of the country.

Mr. Mhango adds that the nomination fees will exclude the majority poor Zambians from contesting elections.
He has since demanded that the ECZ adjusts the nomination fees downwards.
