YALI concerned ECZ is not ready for referendum

Government has been urged to call for a stakeholders’ meeting in view of the ambiguities surrounding feasibility of holding of a referendum alongside the August general elections.

The Young African Leaders Initiative (YALI) is concerned that the Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ) appears not to be ready to undertake a referendum as early as August this year.

YALI governance advisor Isaac Mwanza says there are so many issues that his organization has observed must be sorted out before a referendum can be held.

Mr. Mwanza has referred to interpretation of article 79 of the amended republican constitution as one issue that still needs the attention of the ECZ.

He tells QTV that YALI does not also think the ECZ has made clear to the public how exactly the ballot will be for the referendum.
